Pay the correct account

For internet banking, choose City of Markham or Markham as payee, select property taxes, and use the 20-digit roll number beginning with 36. Do not add a 19 prefix. Payments can also be made through a bank, by mailed cheque or at the Civic Centre cashier. Markham does not accept cash for property taxes.

For a cheque, write the roll number on the front and include the remittance portion. The Civic Centre drop box is at the Thornhill Entrance, 101 Town Centre Boulevard. The cashier operates weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays. Not receiving a bill does not remove the payment obligation.

Automatic payment and account changes

Residential owners may choose four, six or 11 automatic instalments. Commercial and industrial accounts have four- or six-payment options. The 11-payment residential plan runs February through December, with withdrawals on the first of each month. Use the tax bill for exact dates on other plans.

The account must be fully paid to join. Apply separately for each property. Credit-card cheques and line-of-credit accounts are excluded. If a home is sold, cancel and reapply for the next property. Give the city changes at least 14 days before the next payment. Other charges added to a tax bill must be paid separately from the plan. Late amounts attract the stated one-percent instalment penalty and 1.25-percent monthly interest.
