Light bulbs and exclusions

Markham recycling depots stopped accepting bulbs on March 4, 2025. Use the York Region hazardous-waste depot or a Light Recycling Ontario route instead. The accepted list includes CFLs, fluorescent tubes, incandescent and halogen bulbs, LEDs and several specialist lamps. York Region alone is listed for string lights and light strips.

Fixtures and ballasts are excluded from the bulb program. York Region lists a maximum of 20 compact fluorescent tubes per resident per day in this city source. Industrial, commercial and institutional hazardous waste is not accepted as household waste. The listed exclusions also include asbestos, ammunition and explosives, medical or radioactive waste, and PCBs. Call York Region at 1-866-665-6752 about excluded materials.
