Original job description

Company Description

Heartwood Financial Group provides alternative mortgages to Canadians through licensed mortgage brokers, with a focus on common-sense lending that helps people get into homes and stay there. Inspired by the strength of a tree’s heartwood, the company is committed to finding resilient borrowers who may be overlooked by traditional banks. Heartwood’s “Craft Lender” approach means each application receives careful, personalized review rather than automated decisions. The team works closely with brokers to understand each borrower’s story, aiming to say “yes” responsibly and confidently. This values-driven culture emphasizes thoughtful underwriting and sustainable lending practices.

Role Description

The Mortgage Underwriter role at Heartwood Financial Group is a full-time, hybrid position based in North York, ON, with the flexibility to work from home part of the time. This role is responsible for reviewing and analyzing mortgage applications, supporting documentation, and broker submissions to determine creditworthiness and alignment with company lending guidelines. The Mortgage Underwriter will assess income, assets, liabilities, property details, and risk factors to make sound recommendations and decisions within delegated authority. Day-to-day tasks include communicating with mortgage brokers to clarify applicant information, requesting additional documentation when needed, and ensuring files are complete, accurate, and compliant with internal policies and regulatory requirements. The role also involves maintaining detailed records, contributing to continuous improvement of underwriting processes, and collaborating with internal teams to support high-quality, timely mortgage approvals.
