What you will do:
The Materials Lab Technician prepares specimens, operates routine materials laboratory equipment, executes established test procedures, maintains laboratory readiness, and accurately records and reports test results.
This role applies practical knowledge of laboratory safety, sample preparation, measurement, inspection, and equipment care, together with hands-on experience working in a materials, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, or testing laboratory. The role supports metallography, hardness testing, dimensional and visual inspection, optical microscopy, surface and coating evaluation, basic mechanical testing, and component failure investigations. The technician follows approved methods and works with Materials Engineers or other technical specialists when test planning, result interpretation, or root-cause conclusions requiring professional materials expertise.
Work is performed as part of the Validation Team, reporting to the Engineering Team Lead and coordinating with Materials Engineering, Product Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and other cross-functional teams. Expected outcomes include safely prepared and traceable samples; repeatable tests completed to defined procedures; laboratory equipment maintained, verified, and ready for use; accurate data and observations documented in a timely manner; and issues escalated when results, equipment, or samples do not meet requirements. Common activities include cutting, mounting, grinding, and polishing samples; conducting routine laboratory tests and inspections; capturing images and measurements; maintaining consumables, calibration, and 5S; and supporting failure-analysis and development activities.
What you will bring:
Education: Two- to three-year college diploma in engineering, materials, mechanical, manufacturing, or chemical laboratory technology (or a related discipline). Equivalent laboratory experience may be considered.
Experience: 2+yrs hands-on experience in a laboratory, test, manufacturing, or quality environment, including preparing samples, using measurement or inspection equipment, following controlled procedures, and recording results accurately. Materials Lab experience preferred; formal Materials Science training not required.
Technical Skills: Sample cutting, mounting, grinding, and polishing; optical microscopy; hardness testing; dimensional and visual inspection; basic surface/coating evaluation and mechanical testing; calibration checks; sample traceability; 5S; technical reporting; Microsoft 365.
Assets: WHMIS, lab safety, or chemical handling training; familiarity with metallography, tensile testing, tribology, profilometry, SEM sample preparation, or laboratory information systems.
Additional Information:
• Compensation: $55,000 to $70,000 annually
• Recruitment Technology:
- Artificial intelligence (AI) is used to screen, assess, or select applicants for this position.
