Project Context
The Mechanical Automation Designer will contribute to the mechanical design of automated manufacturing cells and lines. The role involves working on sub-systems of moderately to highly complex automatic machines, robotic cells, and material handling systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machine design, process flow, material handling, robotic systems, and motion power systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical).
Key Responsibilities
- Design sub-systems of moderately to complex automatic machines, robotic cells, and material handling systems.
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to generate 3D models using SolidWorks® based on customer specifications.
- Produce high-quality detail models and drawings from sketches, ensuring adherence to industry standards, company best practices, and accuracy.
- Perform preliminary stress calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate designs before modeling.
- Conduct and document engineering calculations (e.g., motor power, robot reach/payload/inertia, chain pull force).
- Perform tolerance analysis on designs and incorporate manufacturing best practices.
- Design structural components, assemblies, and sub-assemblies for hydraulic presses, fabrications, and related equipment.
- Create assembly prints, mechanical drawings, and weld fabrication specifications using SolidWorks.
- Ensure designs comply with company procedures, regulations, and client standards.
- Generate detail and assembly drawings, associated Bills of Materials (BOMs), and technical documentation.
- Submit drawings to senior engineers and manufacturing teams for review and approval.
- Ensure quality, cost, and delivery commitments on projects are met.
- Work within project schedules and budgets, managing time efficiently.
- Provide procurement support for mechanical components by entering data into the MRP system.
- Assist during parts manufacturing, bench and floor assembly, debugging, and integration.
- Write technical documents at an engineering level in English.
Candidate Requirements
- Automation experience (e.g., pick-and-place systems, material conveyors).
- Machinery design experience (involving at least two systems).
- Practical knowledge of mechanical design, including machinery tooling designs.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and drafting engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
- Experience with FEA analysis principles.
- Demonstrated technical problem-solving abilities through experiments, analysis, and systematic methods.
- Ability to understand mechanism design, dimension complex geometry, and interpret measurement standards and material requirements.
- Knowledge of systematic engineering design processes to meet functional requirements.
- Education: Minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BSE) or Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent Engineering Technologist education.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Gripper design experience.
